1. Scientific study of society and human behavior 

2. It's different because it's looks for all kinds of patterns in all places and on all scales, the scope is bigger

3. Seeing the general in the particular which means how what you particularly did fits in the general pattern and seeing the strange in the familiar to approach the everyday world as if you were seeing it for the first time (picking apart what seems normal) 

4. Social location- what options are available to you based on where you are socially, marginalized- social groups outside the centers of power, treats differently based on how much acess to power you have, studies types of power and how that creates inequalities, Socially helps us to understand our society so we know how we can fix the problems, good sociology creates good public policy 

5. Early sociologists were driven to scientifically understand the changes in society, when we see societal change, we want to scientifically understand it so we can predict patterns and create public policies to protect from inequalities
