When a cold air mass pushes against a warm air mass it causes big cumulus clouds and usually goes by fast.  When a warm air mass pushes against a cold air mass it pushes upwards and causes stratis clouds but takes alot longer to pass by and has steady rain for one or two days.

You are describing what happens when 2 air masses meet.  The question is how are clouds forms....this is where terms like condensation, evaporation, density etc come into play...along with explanations of each.
